Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade once again has implemented and reinstated YCW school programs (clubs) at numerous school sites for the 2019-2020 school year. YCW of Miami-Dade has also conducted various school presentations & as-semblies on youth crime prevention topics including: Bullying/Cyberbullying Pre-vention, Drug Prevention, Reporting Crimes, School Violence Prevention, Personal Safety, Character Education, and Gun Safety Awareness.
The Miami-Dade Red Ribbon Week Campaign (October 23-31) was once again successful on educating Miami-Dade County students on Drug Prevention. Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County conducted YCW “Red Ribbon Week” Drug Prevention Assemblies and Presentations at Miami-Dade County Schools. This year’s Red Ribbon Week Theme was “Send a Message, Stay Drug Free”. YCW incorporated the theme in the assemblies and presentations.
YCW School Programs (Clubs) Spotlight
August 2019-January 2020
Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center reinstated a YCW
School Program (Club) for the 2019-2020 school year.
The school’s YCW Advisor is Katherine Fernandez, a 4th
Grade Teacher at the school. Eugenia B. Thomas K-8
Center continues to have a rich history of having successful
YCW School Programs, as they have had one on a
yearly basis for almost two decades. The school’s YCW Program have had several YCW
Club Meetings. The YCW Student Members conducted Bullying Prevention presentations
during the morning announcements. They will be participating in the YCW Poster & Essay
M.A. Milam K-8 Center implemented a YCW School Program
(Club) for the 2019-2020 school year. The program’s
YCW School Advisor is Officer Orlando Mesa of
the M-DCPS School Police Department. Officer Mesa has
incorporated his vast law enforcement experience in the
program. The YCW School Program assisted in a school
clean-up beautification project and they played a vital role
in the success of the project.
Silver Bluff Elementary reinstated a YCW School
Program (Club) for the 2019-2020 school year. The
school’s YCW School Advisor Team are Silvia Fernandez
(a teacher at the school), Natalie Mesa (the
school’s Counselor), and Marilyn Guerra (a teacher
at the school). The school’s YCW Program was part
of the school’s School Clubs Induction Ceremony.
The school’s YCW club meetings take place every month and weekly for updates. The YCW Student
President Samantha Sanchinel runs meetings under adult supervision. Samantha meets weekly with
Mrs. Fernandez for updates and discussions on school events, projects, and meeting notes for upcoming
club events and projects. The YCW Student Members participated in the Red Ribbon Week
Campaign by decorating the school, coordinating a door contest, and working with Ms. Mesa in coordinating
a school-wide event. In addition, the YCW students work with peers around the school
reporting suspicious activity. They bring awareness in respecting one another by their example and
discussions during school announcements. Students are currently working with Ms. Guerra on the
YCW Poster & Essay Contest.
